Michelle Obama recently revealed the emotional experience of her daughter Sasha’s terrifying high school car crash on an appearance on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. Discussing the difficulties of raising independent kids, she spoke out on the lesson of letting go.
Michelle explained that raising her daughters, Sasha and Malia, has been an education in letting go. She said, “Being a mother has been a masterclass in letting go. Try as we might, there’s only so much we can control.”
Following the acquisition of their driver’s licenses, Michelle and Barack purchased their daughters vehicles, with Secret Service agents dispatched to trail behind them for security. But then Michelle remembered a scary moment when Sasha was involved in an automobile accident. “Once they got their license, we acquired a car for them. And then the agents. they now get to follow this teenager to school, to parties,” she said. “But once Sasha got T-boned, literally her car totaled. Some lady T-boned her,” Michelle added, describing the fear of hearing the call that Sasha had an accident and the vehicle was a total loss.
Secret Service’s Role
Fortunately, Sasha came out of the accident with minor injuries. Both of Michelle and Barack’s daughters became good drivers despite the scary experience. Michelle earlier explained how the Secret Service helped Malia learn to drive. She explained, “They had to do things like learn how to drive, and learn how to drive on their own.”
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2018, Michelle discussed a humorous driving lesson for Malia: “Her instructor put her in the car and said, ‘Floor it. Press the gas as hard as you can, and then I want you to stop.'”
Confidence Behind the Wheel
Sasha’s ease driving was seen as she was seen driving confidently, even in the presence of paparazzi. In May 2022, she was photographed dropping Malia off at LAX in a black hatchback, without seeming to notice the cameras. Likewise, in September 2023, Sasha was seen driving through Los Angeles, lighting a cigarette and looking entirely relaxed despite the constant presence of paparazzi.
