On the eve of his exit from office, US President Joe Biden told a packed congregation at Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, South Carolina, that this was the last full day of his presidency. Biden, surrounded by members of the Black church community, urged fellow Democrats not to lose hope as he prepares to hand over the presidency to Republican rival Donald Trump.

The speech by Biden resounded with the themes of resurrection and redemption as he likened the political battles of his presidency to the biblical story of Jesus’ resurrection. “We often reflect on resurrection and redemption, but remember, Jesus was buried on Friday, and he rose on Sunday,” Biden said, adding, “We don’t talk enough about Saturday, when his disciples felt all hope was lost.”

The church was full of applause and emotional support by political allies as Representative Jim Clyburn reminded the audience of how past leaders such as Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman had faced historic setbacks. He expressed confidence that history would treat Biden well even with the latest political challenges.

Biden also reflected on his political journey, acknowledging the disappointment of stepping down from the race for a second term due to concerns over his age and campaign struggles. However, he assured supporters, “I’m not going anywhere,” emphasizing his continued public presence post presidency.

The service, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, was a moment of deep connection with the Black community that helped secure Biden’s victory in the 2020 primaries. Biden spent his final hours as president in South Carolina, a state that played a crucial role in his political rise.
