JD Vance was officially sworn in as the 49th vice president of the United States during a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a conservative appointed by Donald Trump in 2018, administered the oath of office.

Vance, who took the oath surrounded by his family, recited the customary vow to “support and defend the Constitution” and to “faithfully discharge the duties” of the office. Unlike the presidential oath, the vice-presidential oath is not outlined in the US Constitution but was established by Congress and appears in the US Code. It is identical to the oath taken by other federal officials, including lawmakers.

The moment was met with applause in the Rotunda, and afterward, President Trump whispered a message into Vance’s ear, signaling a pivotal moment in the new administration.
