Jaishankar Criticizes Canada in Australia: “Political Space Given to Extremists”

During a joint press conference with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar openly criticized Canada for allegedly providing a “political space” to extremist groups. Jaishankar’s remarks followed a recent attack on the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, Ontario, by pro-Khalistan elements who disrupted a consular event organized by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate.

Concerns Over Nijjar Case Allegations and Diplomatic Surveillance

Jaishankar also addressed Canada’s accusation regarding the alleged murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, claiming that Canada has developed a trend of making allegations without concrete evidence. He further expressed concern over reports that Indian diplomats are under surveillance in Canada, calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing India’s objections to such measures.

Video Evidence of Political Space for Extremists

Highlighting the recent temple incident, Jaishankar urged people to review the video of the altercation in Brampton, suggesting that it reflects the political space provided to extremist groups within Canada. This, he implied, is indicative of a broader environment that tolerates or enables radical actions against Indian institutions and community members.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed Jaishankar’s concerns, describing the vandalism incidents as “upsetting” for the Indian community, especially given the attack’s proximity to Diwali celebrations. Wong assured the Indian community that local officials had taken a firm stance against the acts of vandalism and intimidation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly condemned the violence at the Brampton temple, demanding that the perpetrators be held accountable. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal released a statement calling on Canada to ensure the safety of places of worship, particularly in light of recent escalations involving separatist elements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the incident on social media, describing it as a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate Indian diplomats. Modi urged the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law and take decisive action against those responsible. “Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve,” PM Modi wrote on X, demanding justice for the attack on the Hindu temple.
