Iraq Accuses Israel Of Violating Airspace For Airstrikes In Iran

Iraq has accused Israel of breaching its airspace to carry out airstrikes in Iran. The allegations follow Israeli air operations executed on the night of October 26, which were reportedly in retaliation for an Iranian missile strike on Israel earlier this month.

On Monday, the Iraqi government lodged a formal complaint with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding what it termed a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty. Iraqi government spokesperson Bassim Alawadi confirmed that the complaint specifically condemns Israel for using Iraqi airspace to execute its strikes against Iran.

Iraq, which is significantly influenced by Iran and does not recognize Israel, commonly refers to the country as the “Zionist entity.”

On the night of the airstrikes, approximately 100 Israeli warplanes participated in an operation dubbed “Days of Repentance,” targeting various military and strategic sites within Iran. As requested by US President Joe Biden, the Israeli military refrained from striking Iranian nuclear and oil facilities during this operation.

Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated that the Israeli strikes focused on facilities involved in missile production, including cruise and ballistic missiles that Iran has utilized against Israel this year. Among the targeted sites was the Parchin military facility, known for its previous nuclear weapons-related activities.

Additionally, The New York Times reported that Israel also attacked air defense systems located in Iraq and Syria to prevent any interception of its airstrikes.
