The Indian Consulate in Toronto announced the cancellation of certain scheduled consular camps after Canadian security authorities expressed an inability to provide the required security protection. The announcement, shared on X, stated: “In view of the security agencies conveying their inability to provide minimum security protection to the community camp organizers, Consulate has decided to cancel some of the scheduled consular camps.”
This decision follows recent disruptions by anti-India extremists at a consular camp co-organized by the Indian consulate at the Hindi Sabha Temple in Brampton near Toronto. India expressed its displeasure over the incident at the highest levels, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also voicing concern.
In a press statement, the Indian High Commission noted that these consular camps—designed to assist local beneficiaries with routine services—were organized with full cooperation from local organizers. Requests for adequate security had been made well in advance to Canadian authorities. The High Commission expressed disappointment over the disruptions, stressing concerns for the safety of attendees and Indian nationals who rely on these camps.
Previously, similar disruptions were reported at camps in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2 and 3. In response, the Indian High Commission stated that future consular camps would depend on local authorities providing sufficient security measures.
This issue highlights the ongoing diplomatic strain between India and Canada, with India previously protesting Canada’s alleged surveillance of Indian diplomats and violations of international norms, including the Vienna Convention.
