India Raises Concern Over Australia’s Student Visa Fee Hike

New Delhi, November 28: The Indian government has taken up the issue of Australia’s sharp increase in student visa fees, which is expected to financially burden aspiring Indian students. Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh shared this update in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha by Congress MP Neeraj Dangi.

The Australian government increased the fee for international student visas from AUD 710 to AUD 1600, effective July 1, 2024. This 125% hike has raised significant concerns among Indian students and their families about the affordability of studying in Australia.

India Engages with Australia on Visa Fee Hike

MoS Singh informed Parliament that the issue has been raised with Australian authorities. He assured that discussions are ongoing, alongside other matters related to Indian students studying abroad.

“The hike in visa fee is expected to pose financial challenges to international students, including those from India,” Singh said. He emphasized the importance of the India-Australia education partnership, which strengthens academic, economic, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

India-Australia Educational Ties

India and Australia share a strong educational relationship, with many Indian students pursuing higher studies and collaborative research in Australian universities. However, the increased visa fees could hinder accessibility, sparking concerns about affordability and inclusivity in international education.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing issues affecting Indian students, emphasizing the importance of maintaining accessibility and fairness in bilateral educational ties.

This proactive step by the Indian government underscores its focus on ensuring fair opportunities for students pursuing education abroad.
