Amy Gleason, a veteran executive who has worked in the field of healthcare technology and public service, was appointed acting administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) amid mounting pressure on agencies to reduce spending, cancel contracts, and lay off personnel.
The move follows increasing criticism of DOGE’s restructuring plans. Billionaire Elon Musk and his supporters have actively advocated for the agency’s reduction in size, although the White House insists that Musk is spearheading the move as a senior adviser to Trump and not in an official capacity at DOGE.
Though previous President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order mandating the hiring of a DOGE administrator, there remained confusion about whether someone was in fact in control. Dispelling such concerns, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained during a press briefing Tuesday, “There are career officials and there are political appointees who are helping run DOGE on a day-to-day basis.”
Amy Gleason’s Background and Experience
Gleason, 53, comes with a robust healthcare technology and government service background. As per her LinkedIn profile, she served with the United States Digital Service between 2018 and 2021, an agency that is now renamed the US DOGE Service. After Trump’s reelection, she returned to the agency to assume a leadership position.
Still, her appointment was greeted with reluctance. In a Tuesday letter, more than 20 staff of the now-dead digital service resigned, accusing Musk of making attempts to “dedismantle critical public services.”
Amy Gleason’s Net Worth and Achievements
Although precise information regarding Gleason’s net worth in 2025 is not available, her long history of public service, business, and clinical practice implies a financially sound background. Aside from her governmental positions, she operates a consulting company, Gleason Strategies, and has been a leader in several companies.
Gleason’s work in precision medicine has also been recognized nationally. The White House previously acknowledged her as a Champion of Change for the contribution of her work towards advancing health technology. Outside of her duties as a professional, she is the Vice President of Research for Cure JM Foundation, a charitable organization aiding families of juvenile myositis patients and funding medical research.
Public Reaction to Gleason’s DOGE Appointment
Gleason’s appointment has drawn widespread responses, with some questioning its timing and Musk’s control over DOGE’s affairs. Journalist Sam Stein said on X, “Is Amy Gleason aware of this?”
Political commentator and regular Trump critic Tim Miller was also skeptical, saying, “Elon wants you to believe that this person is the administrator of DOGE? OK! Sure buddy.”
One of the users on X commented, “The White House is saying that Amy Gleason, this Obama-administration nurse, is the Administrator of DOGE. Put this into a sworn statement and file it in court, I triple-dog dare you. Depositions of Elon Musk and Gleason are the only way to resolve this.”
While debates rage about DOGE’s future, Gleason’s stewardship will also come under a microscope in the months ahead. The White House has not released additional information about the agency’s restructuring or Musk’s specific role in its policymaking.
