Hope for Peace: Trump and Palestinian President Reignite Talks

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump recently spoke by phone with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as per reports. During the call, Abbas extended congratulations to Trump on his election win and wished him success in his upcoming term. He also emphasized his commitment to working with Trump for “a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy.”

Trump Expresses Commitment to Peace Efforts

In response, Trump assured Abbas that he aims to “stop the war” and looks forward to working with Palestinian leaders and other key players to advance peace efforts in the Middle East. This pledge comes amid rising expectations for conflict resolution in the region.

Abbas’s Positive Outlook on Future Cooperation

Following the call, Bishara Bahbah, former national chair of Arab Americans for Trump, characterized the conversation as “excellent.” Despite previous tensions, Bahbah noted that Abbas is now ready to work with Trump, signaling a shift from past years of conflict. Relations between the two had been strained since 2017, when Palestine cut ties with the U.S. after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Reflecting on this change, Bahbah remarked, “We’re in a different year now. There is a need for an immediate end to hostilities and a return to peace talks.”

Israel Prepares to Reopen Kissufim Crossing

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces, along with COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories), announced plans to reopen the Kissufim crossing into southern Gaza. The crossing, located near Kibbutz Kissufim, was attacked by Hamas in October 2023, which intensified regional tensions.

Recent Developments Under Biden’s Leadership

Additionally, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller noted that Israel’s security situation has shown improvement, though these developments occurred during President Joe Biden’s administration. As regional leaders discuss peace, the groundwork laid in recent years remains a significant influence.
