Donald Trump, having taken the presidential oath to be the 47th President of the US, announced on the first hour after taking over the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared laughing about it at one time, caught video on a split second when seated behind Trump reading out his message. As Clinton shook her head and laughed out loud, her former president husband sitting next to her could not resist the smile of his wife.

The video of the incident went viral in no time, with social media users sharing their reactions. One commented, “Got to be honest. I don’t think renaming should be a top priority,” while another said, “Her reaction is basically everyone else’s reaction watching from home.” A third user humorously remarked, “Priorities eh? Why lower the price of food when you gotta rename the Gulf of Mexico?”

While the proposal of renaming the Gulf by Trump is attracting media attention, he cannot do that on his own. There is no official international standardization protocol regarding the naming of maritime areas. However, the International Hydrographic Bureau usually standardizes names and resolves disputes over such names. So, Trump can rename it in the official documents of the United States, but other countries would not be obliged to do the same. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested it be called “Mexican America” due to the proposal of renaming.
