Trump Renames Gulf of Mexico ‘Gulf of America,’ Says It’s Integral to the US

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Sunday to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and officially declared February 9 as Gulf of America Day.

While aboard Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl, President Trump stated that the renaming proclamation “restores American pride in the history of American greatness.”

The White House, in a post on X, announced that Air Force One, while heading to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, flew over international waters, marking “the first time in history flying over the recently renamed Gulf of America.”

According to the executive order posted on the White House website, the newly renamed Gulf of America is defined as “the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico.”

The order instructs U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to implement the change within 30 days and oversee the official transition. Reports indicate that the U.S. Coast Guard has already begun referring to the body of water as the Gulf of America.

President Trump, emphasizing that the renaming would restore American pride, stated, “It is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” Fox 5 DC reported.

Since taking office for a second term on January 20, Trump has been targeting Mexico, initially imposing a 25% trade tariff on Mexican goods, which was later paused for a month following discussions with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Trump has also accused Mexico of drug smuggling and illegal immigration into the U.S.
