A deadly fire broke out at a marina in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Monday evening, leaving one person dead and five others severely burned. The fire started just before 6 pm on the 1900 block of Southeast 15th Street, behind the 15th Street Fisheries restaurant, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
Explosion Sparks Blaze at Fuel Docks
The fire began near the marina’s fuel docks, triggered by an explosion. Several 911 callers reported the blast, which ignited a boat and quickly spread to a second vessel. Firefighters worked swiftly to control the flames, but not before they caused significant damage.
Body Recovered and Injuries Reported
During the rescue efforts, divers recovered the body of a missing person from the water. Three others were rushed to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. Officials confirmed that the victims suffered traumatic burns from the fire.
Witnesses at the scene recalled the terrifying moments as the fire spread. One witness said, “I felt the vibration through my body. I saw the top half of the boat fly up about 10 feet and come right back down.” Another described the horror: “I saw people walking around on fire.”
Investigation Underway
Video footage from the scene showed flames shooting from the first boat and quickly reaching the second. Authorities are investigating whether the explosion occurred during refueling. The names of the deceased and injured have not been disclosed, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
