In December, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall notice for Lay’s Classic Potato Chips because a consignment of this popular snack is suspected to have undeclared milk ingredients. That recall notice has just been promoted to ‘Class I,’ the highest degree of risk.
It poses such a danger that it might cause death in some cases.
Undeclared Milk Risk Which Could Prove Fatal
The FDA’s ‘Class I’ recall means that there is a reasonable probability the affected product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or death. The recall specifically pertains to over 6,300 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, each weighing 13 ounces, that may contain undeclared milk.
This could trigger severe allergic reactions, especially for individuals with milk allergies, including the possibility of life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Affected Areas and Product Removal
The contaminated batch was sold in Washington and Oregon, with the product hitting stores on November 3, 2024. Frito-Lay, which manufactures Lay’s potato chips, has stated that the recalled product is no longer available for purchase. The recall notice was published on December 16, 2024, following consumer complaints that brought the problem to the company’s attention.
The recall process was completely worked out with cooperation from the FDA. The withdrawal of the impacted products was immediately done in-store and e-commerce-selves.
Frito-Lay Statements on Recall
Frito-Lay addressed the recall in a statement, stating that consumers who experience an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are at high risk. They warned that ingesting the recalled product could lead to serious or even life-threatening allergic reactions. However, the company continued by reassuring them that they acted fast to check the situation and minimize its spread only to two states.
Frito-Lay added that anyone who had bought this product should throw it away immediately.
Milk Allergy Symptoms and Dangers
A milk allergy can cause severe symptoms, as the Mayo Clinic indicates. These symptoms include wheezing, vomiting, coughing, shortness of breath, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, and hives. The most extreme result of a milk allergy is anaphylaxis, which can be fatal, as it obstructs breathing.
Potential buyers who think they have purchased the recalled product are urged to take immediate action. They are advised to follow the FDA guidance to avoid health risks.
