Elon Musk’s popularity is seeing a significant decline, according to a recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) poll. The survey reveals that the billionaire Tesla CEO is becoming increasingly unpopular among Americans, especially as he takes on his new role as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency under former President Donald Trump. The poll indicates that only 40% of respondents have a favourable opinion of Musk, while a majority of 51% view him unfavourably. This marks a notable drop from October, when public opinion was evenly split at 45%. The poll was conducted between January 9 and 14, involving 750 registered voters through telephone and text-to-web methods, with a margin of error of ±2.5%.
Musk’s Influence Within Trump’s Administration
Despite his declining approval ratings, Musk remains a key figure in Trump’s inner circle. Appointed to lead efforts in improving government efficiency, his responsibilities include curbing unnecessary expenditures and ensuring responsible use of taxpayer money. Reports suggest that Musk played an active role in recommending candidates for Trump’s new cabinet, a move that has sparked controversy and internal tensions. He has continued to maintain a visible presence within Trump’s administration, participating in meetings at Mar-a-Lago and speaking at the inauguration ceremony.
Declining Popularity in the UK
Musk’s unpopularity extends beyond the United States. A recent YouGov poll in the United Kingdom highlights a similar trend, showing a net approval rating of minus 51. According to the poll, 71% of Britons hold negative opinions of Musk, while only 20% have a favourable view. This decline in public perception coincides with Musk’s controversial involvement in UK politics, including his calls for a new general election and remarks linking Prime Minister Keir Starmer to a past scandal. His statements have further fuelled public criticism and contributed to his declining reputation overseas.
As Musk navigates his new political responsibilities, his public image continues to face scrutiny both domestically and internationally.
