UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer handed US President Donald Trump a letter from King Charles during his White House visit in February. The letter invited Donald Trump for a second state visit to Britain.
Reports later claimed King Charles planned to invite the US to join the Commonwealth. Donald Trump responded, saying, “I love King Charles.”
Trump’s Commonwealth Invitation
Donald Trump hinted he would welcome an “associate membership” offer from King Charles. He shared a news report on Truth Social about a “secret offer” during his upcoming visit to Scotland.
The Sun reported that King Charles planned to extend the offer as a goodwill gesture. The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) was also reportedly pushing for US affiliation. A Daily Mail source stated, “This is being discussed at the highest levels.”
The source added that Donald Trump respects the Royal Family and may see benefits in Commonwealth membership. Some insiders believe this move could strengthen US-UK ties. Others speculate it’s meant to ease tensions between the US and Canada.
What is the Commonwealth?
The British Commonwealth, formed in 1926, includes 56 nations, many former UK colonies. Some, however, have no historical ties to Britain. The British monarch leads the group.
Membership is voluntary. Countries must express interest and pass an assessment before joining. The Commonwealth promotes democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
Nations can also face suspension. Nigeria was suspended in 1995 after a military coup but reinstated in 1999. Pakistan and Zimbabwe have also faced suspensions.
Will the US Join?
British officials deny any formal proposal. The Financial Times reported that it’s “a matter for the palace.” Experts doubt the US would accept even if an offer were made.
The US has a history of resisting British influence. Many Americans, including Trump’s supporters, strongly oppose joining the Commonwealth. “If we wanted to be part of England, we wouldn’t have elected you!” one supporter wrote online.
Far-right commentator Alex Jones warned that trying to join the Commonwealth would trigger “1776 again!”
Other countries, including Canada, may also reject the US joining. Some Canadians value the Commonwealth precisely because it excludes the US.
For now, Trump’s Commonwealth membership remains a distant possibility—if it was ever a real offer at all.
