Donald Trump’s recent suggestion to annex Canada as the 51st U.S. state has drawn a sharp rebuke from Canadian MP and New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Singh issued a stern warning, stating, “If you pick a fight with Canada, there’ll be a price to pay.”
Singh’s comments came amidst political turbulence following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation last week. Addressing the issue, Singh emphasized Canada’s unity and resilience.
In the video, Singh asserted, “This is not for sale, not now, and not ever.” He highlighted the collective pride of Canadians and their willingness to protect their homeland.
He added, “Right now, with forest fires ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters are stepping up. That’s who we are. We support our neighbors. But if Donald Trump thinks he can pick a fight with us, there will be consequences.”
Singh also proposed retaliatory tariffs should Trump impose levies on Canadian imports, suggesting, “Anyone running as Prime Minister should take the same stance.”
Trump has claimed that many Canadians support joining the U.S., citing subsidies and military protection costs. In a Truth Social post, he stated, “Canada would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it’s a great idea—51st State!”
He also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports unless stricter measures are taken to curb immigration and the illegal drug trade.
Singh’s message underscores the importance of Canadian sovereignty and the nation’s readiness to respond to external pressures. His strong stance resonates with Canadians who value their independence and identity.
