Oregon’s ranking Democrat and Sen Ron Wyden, who is also one of the most senior Democrats in Congress, also vociferously condemned President Donald Trump’s action to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canadian imports.
With a firm statement, Wyden was critical of Trump for sending the US economy on the road to destruction. “Trump is steering the US economy straight into a wall and asking American families to serve as human crash test dummies,” he said.
Trump recently reaffirmed that there would be a tariff of 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada because there continue to be concerns regarding drug trafficking. Wyden warned that this would have long-term economic consequences, adding costs to essential goods while endangering American jobs.
“Slapping tariffs on everything Americans buy from Canada, Mexico, and China will drive up the cost of food, gasoline, and cars, along with lower jobs and lower pay,” Wyden stated. He also argued that America’s big trading partners would retaliate and damage American exports.
The senator accused Trump of betraying voters who had voted for him in hopes of economic relief. “Anyone who voted for Donald Trump because they wanted lower prices and a fairer economy has a right to feel betrayed by his economic sabotage,” he continued.
Wyden was also critical of Trump’s credibility in international deals, contending that his unreliability had the ability to disintegrate US alliances. “It is hard to envision any international leader entering an agreement with a person who switches his stance every day and is unable to keep agreements month after month,” he stated.
As Trump insists on the tariff policy, criticism from Democratic leaders and economists is rising day by day, with their worries over its long-term impact on American consumers as well as global trade relations.
