Schools across the U.S. are cracking down on Crocs, with dozens of institutions in at least 20 states banning the popular footwear, according to reports from the New York Post and Today. Students who wear Crocs to class have faced disciplinary action, as administrators argue the shoes pose safety risks and can lead to injuries.

Some school officials cite concerns over students not using the heel straps, increasing the likelihood of trips and falls due to the clog-style design. Others say Crocs are a classroom distraction, as students often adorn them with flashy, collectible charms.

To enforce the ban, schools have adopted various measures, including requiring students to change shoes or placing them in in-school suspension if they fail to comply.

These States Have Banned Crocs Footwear From Schools

ALABAMA – Stoney Pritchett, principal of Bessemer City High School, emphasized the safety risks associated with Crocs. Speaking to TODAY, he said, “It’s actually a safety hazard. Man, they can twist the knees, twist the ankles, things like that.” He also pointed out that the footwear lack the necessary mobility support for students, adding, “In the hallway, kids are moving, things are happening.”

GEORGIA – Lake City Elementary School has implemented a closed-toe shoe requirement in its dress code, explicitly banning Crocs to ensure student safety.

FLORIDA – Several school districts have taken a strict stance, enforcing a “NO CROCS” rule in their dress codes.

Schools aren’t the only places restricting on the footwear. Disney World has banned the shoes on escalators, while medical facilities and laboratories have also prohibited them due to safety concerns. Many medical professionals support the ban, including podiatrist Dr. Priya Parthasarathy, who warned of potential injuries: “Crocs can easily get caught in equipment, causing the child to fall or injure their foot or rip a toenail off. Things I see in the office on a daily basis.”

Defending the footwear, a Crocs spokesperson told TODAY, “The Classic Clog is a comfortable, casual shoe that is appropriate for everyday wear. We are not, nor do we market ourselves as, a specialty or performance brand.”
