China Seeks Stronger Partnership With US, Emphasizing Dialogue And Cooperation

China’s Ambassador to Washington, Xie Feng, expressed a desire for stronger ties between the US and China, emphasizing mutual partnership and friendship. In a speech in Hong Kong on Friday, Xie clarified that China has no intention of surpassing or replacing the United States, aiming instead to reset relations ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January.

Xie stressed that dialogue and cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, energy, AI, and public health could benefit both countries. While acknowledging past challenges, he highlighted China’s commitment to strengthening ties with the US and opposing unilateralism and protectionism.

Trump has promised to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, a policy that Beijing hopes will also create tensions between the US and its European and Asian allies, allowing China to expand its influence. However, some analysts suggest that China’s offer to counterbalance a Trump-led US is less compelling than it was in 2016.

Despite differences, Xie remained hopeful about resolving concerns through direct communication and equal dialogue. However, he warned that Taiwan remains a potential flashpoint for conflict between the two nations, reiterating China’s stance that the island is part of its territory, which Taiwan rejects.

Xie’s remarks reflect a diplomatic effort to ease tensions and build a more collaborative relationship between the two largest economies in the world.
