‘Borders Aren’t Bargains’: Germany’s Scholz Responds To Trump’s Greenland Plan

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz issued a stern warning to US President-elect Donald Trump regarding his controversial ambitions to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. Scholz stressed that all nations, regardless of power, must respect the sanctity of international borders. The statement from Germany follows similar concerns raised by France.

Speaking to European leaders and the president of the European Council on Wednesday, Scholz emphasised, “The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to every country, whether to the east or the west of us. Every state must abide by this, no matter its size or influence. It is a cornerstone of international law and fundamental to Western values.”

Although Scholz refrained from directly naming Trump, he referred to the global “incomprehension” caused by recent statements from the United States. The German Chancellor’s remarks come with an ironic historical undertone, given Germany’s actions in the early 20th century that led to World War II.

Trump Eyes Greenland Amidst Global Criticism

Trump, known for previously expressing interest in purchasing Greenland, recently suggested that Washington might consider using military force to acquire the autonomous Danish territory. Greenland’s leadership, along with Denmark, has firmly stated that the region is “not for sale.”

Defending his stance as a matter of national security, Trump argued that acquiring Greenland would benefit all parties involved. However, Scholz countered, emphasising the importance of allied unity to uphold international law. “Borders must not be altered by force,” he stated, highlighting parallels with ongoing efforts to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty.

France Joins Germany in Defending International Law

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot echoed Germany’s concerns, affirming Europe’s commitment to safeguarding international law. Speaking on France Inter radio, Barrot dismissed the likelihood of a US invasion of Greenland but warned of a global shift toward “the law of the strongest.”

“There is no question of the EU allowing any nation to undermine sovereign borders,” Barrot declared. He also emphasised that Europe must remain vigilant to ensure global peace and stability in the face of such challenges.
