Washington, DC: US President Joe Biden delivered a foreign policy address on Monday, reflecting on his administration’s strategic response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Biden highlighted the dual objectives achieved under his leadership: rallying global support for Ukraine and avoiding a nuclear confrontation.
Rallying Support for Ukraine and Avoiding Nuclear War
“When Putin launched his invasion, I had two jobs: to rally the world to defend Ukraine and avoid war between two nuclear powers. We did both,” Biden said. He also emphasized the foundation laid for the next administration to continue supporting Ukraine and its people.
Strengthening America and Global Alliances
Biden stated that his administration has made America stronger both domestically and internationally. “Since Kamala (Harris) and I took office, our nation has become stronger at home and in the world,” he said.
America’s global standing, he added, has been bolstered through stronger alliances and weakened adversaries.
NATO: Bigger, Stronger, and More Unified
Highlighting progress within NATO, Biden noted a significant increase in member nations meeting the 2% GDP defence spending target.
“Before I took office, 9 of our NATO allies were spending 2% of GDP on defence. Now, 23 are. Our alliances are stronger than they’ve been in decades, and NATO is bigger and more capable than ever,” he remarked.
A Foundation for Future Leadership
Biden expressed confidence in the groundwork laid for the coming administration, ensuring a brighter future for Ukraine and continued international collaboration.
As his term comes to an end, Biden reiterated his belief that America is more prepared and capable than it has been in a long time.
