Biden Races To Send Billions In Aid To Ukraine Before Trump Takes Office

With Donald Trump’s inauguration looming, US President Joe Biden is working to accelerate the delivery of billions in aid to Ukraine. The goal? To bolster Kyiv’s defenses as it faces ongoing Russian aggression and potential policy shifts under a new administration.

What’s at Stake for Ukraine?

The urgency comes as Trump, known for his skepticism about US support for Ukraine, prepares to take office. The president-elect has criticized the extensive military aid, suggesting he could resolve the conflict quickly, potentially by urging Ukraine to concede territory to Russia — a move Kyiv strongly opposes.

Remaining Aid Packages

Biden’s administration has passed five significant aid packages for Ukraine, totaling around $175 billion. However, roughly $9 billion is yet to be delivered, including:
– $4.3 billion from a weapons transfer authority approved in April.
– $2.8 billion in previously authorized transfers.
– $2 billion for purchasing new weapons from industry.

Challenges in Delivering Aid

Despite these commitments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently noted that only 10% of pledged aid had reached Ukraine due to bureaucratic and logistical delays. Previous delays in aid distribution had serious consequences, allowing Russia to make significant advances in eastern Ukraine, including the capture of key territories.

What’s Next for Ukraine?

The potential shift in US foreign policy under a Trump administration has heightened Ukraine’s urgency for immediate support. With a Republican-controlled Congress likely to prioritize other domestic issues, Kyiv is keen to secure as much aid as possible while Biden remains in office.
