White House officials stated that US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed some ongoing efforts to be able to settle a ceasefire with hostage release within Gaza during Sunday’s phone call. The two leaders are part of US efforts to bring a deal towards the end of its presidency on Jan. 20.

Biden called for an immediate ceasefire to allow for increased humanitarian efforts and the release of hostages being held in Gaza. Netanyahu spoke about negotiations and his decision to give his top security team a mandate currently in Doha to forge a hostage deal.

The leaders also spoke about the dynamics in the region, which included a ceasefire in Lebanon, the Assad regime in Syria crumbling, and Iran’s influence weakened. Biden further stated that the United States is committed to Israel’s security, which Netanyahu thanked him for his steady support.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the parties are “very close” to reaching an agreement but that challenges remain, especially with Hamas. He maintained that the administration would work hard during the remaining period in office to make a deal happen.

Reports are emerging that progress has been made in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, who have been secretly speaking through officials in Doha. Biden is said to be briefed daily on these negotiations. The vice president-elect, JD Vance, suggested a US hostage announcement from the Middle East could occur in the final days of the Biden administration.

The Gaza conflict has worsened after a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. The Israeli offensive has caused over 46,000 deaths in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials, with widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed strong support for Israel and intends to bring peace to the Middle East but is still unknown concerning concrete plans.
