According to a source close to the negotiations, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen conducted a meeting, implying that an agreement has been reached by them regarding the fact that the Atlantic Alliance must now prepare itself for the new Arctic environment. Both leaders presented arguments that all the NATO allies have an important role to play in the strengthening security in the Arctic region.

On his part, US President Donald Trump has renewed interest in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Since his re-election in November, Trump has stated that he would annex Greenland into the United States. He did not rule out using military or economic leverage to force Denmark to give up the territory.

With such high potential in resources and strategic importance, the Arctic holds as its very core point international geopolitics. NATO’s concept of collective defense represents a raised sense of concern about security and sovereignty over this region.
