A Nation Mourns: What To Expect At Jimmy Carter’s Funeral And Who Will Speak

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president, passed away at the age of 100, the Carter Center confirmed on Sunday. Known for his dedication to global health, human rights, and his post-presidency humanitarian work, Carter’s death marks the loss of the longest-lived U.S. president.

A Life of Service and Compassion

Carter entered hospice care in February 2023 following a series of hospitalisations. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2025, and despite his health challenges, continued to champion causes close to his heart. As a former president, he stood out not only for his leadership but also for his post-presidency contributions, earning admiration worldwide for his work with the Carter Center and his efforts to promote peace, democracy, and human rights.

Biden and Trump Pay Tribute

In response to Carter’s passing, President Joe Biden paid tribute, acknowledging his leadership and calling Carter “an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.” Biden further remarked, “What’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.”

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, although ideologically opposed to Carter, expressed his respect, stating, “He truly loved and respected our country, and all it stands for. He was a truly good man and will be greatly missed.”

A Historic State Funeral

The U.S. will honour Carter with a state funeral, the first for a Democratic president in over 50 years. President Biden has revealed that Carter personally requested him to deliver his eulogy. While Biden’s participation is confirmed, Trump’s role in the funeral service remains uncertain, although he may attend along with other world leaders.

Carter’s Remarkable Legacy

Carter’s passing signifies the end of an era for both U.S. politics and global humanitarianism. His leadership extended well beyond the presidency, and his legacy will continue to influence global affairs for generations to come.
