As U.S. President Donald Trump continues his efforts to overhaul federal agencies, a report indicates that approximately 75,000 federal employees have accepted the buyout he proposed. The Hill cited senior officials in the Trump administration confirming the figure.

Notably, this number emerged shortly after a court dismissed a challenge from unions seeking to block the program. The ruling allowed government officials to formally shut down the initiative known as the Fork in the Road program.

The buyout offered under this initiative provided federal workers with eight months of pay and benefits for those opting to leave government service, as Trump pushes forward with his return-to-office mandate.

3.75% of federal employees are onboard

Officials noted that the 75,000 employees who accepted the buyout account for 3.75% of the nation’s 2 million federal workers, falling short of the White House’s expected range of 5% to 10%.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision to uphold the Deferred Resignation Program.

“OPM is pleased the court has rejected a desperate effort to strike down the Deferred Resignation Program,” the agency stated.

“This program was carefully designed, thoroughly vetted, and provides generous benefits so federal workers can plan for their futures,” it added.

The figures were first reported by Semafor. Meanwhile, unions had warned employees against accepting the offer, arguing that certain provisions in the contract conflicted with OPM’s assurances, raising uncertainty about whether departing workers would be free to seek outside employment.

Meanwhile, a federal judge dismissed the unions’ attempt to halt the program, ruling that they lacked the legal standing to sue.

Following the court’s decision, American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley criticized the initiative, stating, “We continue to maintain it is illegal to force American citizens who have dedicated their careers to public service to make a decision, in a few short days, without adequate information, about whether to uproot their families and leave their careers for what amounts to an unfunded IOU from Elon Musk.”
