Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei referred to women as “delicate flowers” in a tweet on Wednesday, highlighting their familial role and advocating for care and respect toward them.
“A woman is a delicate flower and not a housemaid,” Khamenei shared on X. “A woman should be treated like a flower in the home. A flower needs to be cared for.”
In an earlier tweet, Khamenei had elaborated on gender roles, stating, “Women and men have different roles in the family. For example, the man is responsible for the family’s expenses, while the woman is responsible for childbearing. This doesn’t imply superiority. They’re different merits, and the rights of men and women aren’t calculated based on these.”
The remarks come as Iran continues to face international criticism over its stance on women’s rights, particularly in response to strict hijab laws.
Recently, Iran’s National Security Council delayed the implementation of the controversial “hijab and chastity law,” citing ambiguities in the legislation amid both domestic and international backlash.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have denounced Iran’s policies on women, accusing the authorities of deepening repression.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Leader has alleged that the US and Israel orchestrated efforts to overthrow Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad and remove Iran from the country.
