London [UK] – UK Conservative MP Bob Blackman extended his Holi wishes in the House of Commons while narrating the mythology behind the festival of colors.
Speaking about the festival’s significance, he explained how Holi celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the eternal love of Radha and Krishna. He also humorously advised first-time attendees to be mindful of their clothing choices.
A Humorous Warning for First-Timers
During his speech, Blackman jokingly warned those attending Holi celebrations for the first time to avoid wearing business attire. He explained that Holi colors are hard to remove and can ruin formal clothing.
“Now for colleagues who are attending Holi for the first time, I recommend you don’t wear business attire because colors will be thrown, and you’ll be coated in different colors. I advise you that you probably won’t be able to clean the clothes afterward,” he said. His remark sparked laughter among the attendees.
Holi’s Mythological Significance
Holi, one of the most vibrant Hindu festivals, is deeply rooted in mythology. Blackman recalled the legend of Prahlad and Holika, emphasizing the victory of devotion and righteousness over evil.
According to Hindu mythology, Hiranyakashyapu, a demon king, was angered by his son Prahlad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu. He ordered his sister, Holika, to kill Prahlad by sitting in a fire with him. While Holika had a boon that protected her from fire, she was burned to death, whereas Prahlad remained unharmed due to Vishnu’s blessings.
Blackman’s Holi Wishes
In his concluding remarks, Blackman expressed his best wishes for Holi celebrations worldwide.
“Happy Holi to everyone celebrating in Harrow East and around the world! May this Festival of Colors bring joy and happiness to your life!” he said.
His speech not only conveyed festive wishes but also brought a lighthearted moment to Parliament, making Holi celebrations even more special for the Indian diaspora in the UK.
