Deir Ezzor, December 11 – Syrian rebels, who recently overthrew President Bashar al-Assad, announced on Tuesday that they have seized control of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the development, noting that Kurdish forces have withdrawn to nearby areas.
In a formal announcement, the rebels stated:
“Our forces have seized the entire city of Deir Ezzor.”
The capture of this strategic city highlights the growing influence of rebel forces as they consolidate power in the wake of Assad’s removal.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, confirmed that Kurdish forces, previously stationed in Deir Ezzor, have moved to other localities. This withdrawal underscores shifting alliances and changing control in the region.
Deir Ezzor, situated along the Euphrates River, holds strategic importance due to its location and resources. The city’s capture marks a major milestone for the rebels as they expand their foothold in Syria.
The seizure of Deir Ezzor reflects the evolving power dynamics in Syria post-Assad. As rebel forces continue to advance, the region faces increasing uncertainty, with implications for both local and international stakeholders.
