Swedish Princess Birgitta Passes Away At 87: King Gustaf’s Tribute

Princess Birgitta of Sweden, the older sister of King Carl XVI Gustaf, passed away at the age of 87. The Swedish Royal Palace confirmed the news, stating she died peacefully at her home in Majorca, Spain. While the cause of death remains undisclosed, the palace extended condolences to her children, grandchildren, and loved ones.

King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Heartfelt Tribute

In a statement, King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his sorrow:

“My sister was a colourful and straightforward person who will be deeply missed by me and my family. Together with my entire family, I send my condolences to Princess Birgitta’s children and grandchildren.”

A Royal Life Marked by Dedication

Born in 1937 at Haga Castle, Princess Birgitta was the second child of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. She married Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern, a German art historian of equal royal rank, allowing her to retain her royal title after marriage.

The couple had three children: Prince Carl, Princess Desiree, and Prince Hubertus. Although they separated in 1990, they remained married until Johann’s death in 2016.

Contributions Beyond Royal Duties

Princess Birgitta was deeply committed to charitable causes. She co-founded the HELP Foundation, which supports vulnerable children worldwide. Her passion for golf led her to organise the Princess Birgitta Trophy at her home course in Majorca.

Her philanthropic vision was clear when she said in 2009:
“Whenever people ask what I want to do for charity, I always reply: only if it’s about children, because they are our future.”

A Unique Royal

Unlike other Swedish royals, Princess Birgitta spent much of her life abroad, embracing a colourful and relaxed lifestyle in Spain. Her individuality and commitment to meaningful causes left an indelible mark on those who knew her.

The royal family, along with her children and grandchildren, mourn the loss of a vibrant and compassionate figure.
