Princess Birgitta of Sweden, the older sister of King Carl XVI Gustaf, passed away at the age of 87. The Swedish Royal Palace confirmed the news, stating she died peacefully at her home in Majorca, Spain. Born in 1937 at Haga Castle, Princess Birgitta was the second child of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. She married Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern, a German art historian of equal royal rank, allowing her to retain her royal title after marriage.

The couple had three children: Prince Carl, Princess Desiree, and Prince Hubertus. Although they separated in 1990, they remained married until Johann’s death in 2016.
