US President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the release of hostages taken from Gaza before his inauguration on January 20, 2025. Writing on Truth Social, Trump declared that if the hostages are not freed by this date, there will be severe consequences for those responsible, stating, “ALL HELL TO PAY” in the Middle East. He promised that the perpetrators would face retaliation unprecedented in U.S. history.

Approximately 250 individuals were taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. While about 100 hostages remain in Gaza, Israeli authorities report that a third of them are believed to have been killed. The Biden administration has been working with Israel and international mediators, including Qatar and Egypt, to broker a ceasefire and facilitate the release of hostages, though progress has been slow.
