Sexual assault and rape cases investigation surrounding French football star Kylian Mbappé are closed due to insufficient evidence announced by the Swedish prosecutors on Thursday. The case has been stemmed from alleged incidents at a Stockholm hotel on October 10.
While prosecutors did not disclose the suspect’s identity, Swedish media, including SVT and dailies Expressen and Aftonbladet, previously reported that the individual was Mbappé, 25. The footballer, through his representatives, had vehemently denied the accusations, calling them “totally false” and “slanderous rumors.”
Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakova clarified in a statement, “During the investigation, a person was suspected on reasonable grounds of rape and two instances of sexual assault. However, my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed, and the investigation is therefore closed.”
Chirakova added that the suspect had not been formally notified of their status in the investigation.
Following the announcement, Mbappé’s club, Real Madrid, declined to comment. His lawyer and public relations team have not responded to requests for statements.
The case attracted significant media attention in Sweden, but prosecutors emphasized that legal thresholds for continuing the case had not been met.
