Keir Starmer’s Brother Nick Dies After Battle with Cancer

Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, has paid tribute to his brother Nick, who passed away at the age of 60 after a long battle with cancer. In a statement, Sir Keir described his younger brother as “a wonderful man” who faced life’s challenges with courage and good humor. Nick, who had learning difficulties due to complications at birth, died peacefully on Boxing Day, according to a spokesperson for the Prime Minister.

Life Challenges and Family Bond

Despite his learning difficulties, Nick Starmer met life’s challenges head-on. Growing up in Surrey, Keir shared fond memories of their childhood, including their shared room and family moments. In his biography, Keir spoke candidly about how Nick, who was often labeled as “remedial” by the school system, had little support but still managed to live independently, working on scrap cars and scaffolding.

Keir recalled how their mother, Jo, had taught Nick to read, while he himself fought against societal perceptions that labeled his brother as “thick” or “stupid.” Despite these challenges, Nick lived independently and had a marriage, though it ended later.

Family Support During Illness

Keir Starmer made several hospital visits to see his brother in 2022, as Nick’s health deteriorated. Even while leading the Labour Party and campaigning, the Prime Minister made time for these personal visits. His dedication to his brother was so strong that he was known by the hospital staff, who would let him enter through a back door to avoid publicity.

In his 2023 Labour Party conference speech, Keir spoke movingly about his brother’s struggles and how their family had always supported each other, despite Nick not having the opportunities he himself had. Keir fondly recalled his father’s words, reminding him that every achievement in his life was equally matched by Nick’s achievements.

Tributes from Political Figures

The death of Nick Starmer has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch expressed her condolences, calling it “awful news, particularly devastating at Christmas time.” Irish Premier Simon Harris also extended his sympathy to Keir and his family.
