Italian Ambassador Safe After Militia Breaches Syria Residence Amid Turmoil

In the aftermath of Syria conflict, militia fighters has forcefully entered the residence of Italy’s ambassador to Syria on Sunday, leaving the diplomat and his security team unharmed, according to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

As reported by the Italian news agency ANSA, the intrusion occurred amid escalating unrest in Syria, where rebels claim to have deposed President Bashar al-Assad. According to ministry sources, Syrian fighters have been targeting embassies and international NGO offices in search of Assad’s allies.

Speaking to reporters, Tajani confirmed the incident. “This morning, an armed group entered the garden of the ambassador’s residence. They only took three vehicles, and that was the extent of it. Neither the ambassador nor the Carabinieri officers stationed at the embassy were harmed,” he stated.

Following the breach, the ambassador and the security officers were relocated to a secure location to ensure their safety, Tajani added.

The breach underscores the volatile situation in Syria, where government and diplomatic institutions face increasing risks as the conflict intensifies. Italy has not yet commented on whether additional security measures will be implemented for its embassy staff in Damascus.

This incident highlights the growing dangers for foreign diplomats in Syria as the country grapples with a rapid power shift and widespread instability.
