Jerusalem, December 10 – Israel’s Ministry of Defense (IMOD) is intensifying its focus on space defense as a crucial element of modern warfare. Speaking at the International Defense-Tech Summit hosted by Tel Aviv University, Avi Berger, Head of the Space Office at the IMOD Directorate of Defense, Research & Development (DDR&D), underscored the growing importance of satellite technology in Israel’s defense strategy.
Addressing the summit, Berger stated that current conflicts are being fought across seven different arenas, some over 2,000 kilometers from Israel. Highlighting the geographic scale of threats, including Iran’s vast 1.6 million square kilometers, Berger said:
“Space capabilities are critical for supporting the IDF’s operational activity. Satellites allow us to monitor distant arenas in near real-time and provide continuous intelligence.”
Berger emphasized the need for advanced satellite constellations to ensure full, uninterrupted coverage of the Middle East. Such systems would provide the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and defense agencies with continuous, actionable intelligence.
The IMOD reported a surge in collaborations with Israeli startups and small businesses over the past year, driven by growing defense needs. Between October 2023 and September 2024:
This partnership not only enhances Israel’s self-reliance in manufacturing but also bolsters its economy through the development of cutting-edge solutions.
One of the primary goals outlined by Berger is developing satellite constellations capable of:
These advancements aim to keep Israel ahead in detecting and addressing threats from neighboring regions.
The Defense-Tech Summit brought together stakeholders from defense industries, academia, startups, and venture capital. It provided a forum for innovative ideas and strategies to meet emerging defense challenges.
