Israel Issues Grim Warning to Houthis Amid Red Sea Attacks

In a fiery statement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened severe action against the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen, accusing them of escalating hostilities in the Red Sea. Katz’s remarks come after he publicly admitted to Israel’s involvement in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in July.

Israel’s Warning to the Houthis

Speaking at an event honoring defence ministry personnel, Katz accused the Houthis of firing missiles at Israel, vowing a decisive response.

“We will damage their strategic infrastructure, and we will behead their leaders – just as we did to Haniyeh, Sinwar, and Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon – we will do it in Hodeidah and Sana’a,” he stated.

Context Behind the Escalation

  • Houthi Actions: The Houthis, who operate from Yemen, have intensified attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea over the past year. They claim these actions express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
  • Israel’s Retaliation: Israel has responded aggressively to perceived threats, including a full-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Admission of Haniyeh Assassination

Katz confirmed Israel’s role in the July killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an act previously attributed to Israel by Iranian authorities.

  • Haniyeh was a prominent figure in Hamas’ international diplomacy, often based in Qatar. His assassination has further strained relations between Israel and Iran.

Broader Conflict in the Middle East

  • On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a deadly assault on Israeli cities, killing over 1,200 people, prompting a heavy Israeli offensive in Gaza.
  • Iran-backed militias, including Hezbollah and the Houthis, have since escalated their activities, drawing further Israeli retaliation.

Significance of the Red Sea Conflict

The Houthis’ naval blockade attempts and missile attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea pose a significant threat to regional security. Israel’s explicit warning underscores the intensifying military and political conflict in the Middle East.
