India and Bahrain Deepen Ties in Trade, Healthcare, and Defence

The 4th High Joint Commission (HJC) meeting, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, marked a significant step in the deepening ties between the two nations. Held in Manama, Bahrain, the discussions focused on diverse areas of collaboration:

Trade and Investment

  1. Both nations emphasized the need to boost trade relations.
  2. Agreement to establish a Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment.
  3. Bahrain reiterated its commitment to conclude a bilateral agreement on eliminating double taxation, fostering economic growth.

Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals

  1. The first Joint Working Group on Healthcare Cooperation set the foundation for expanding ties in medical tourism and pharmaceuticals.
  2. India advocated for market access to its pharmaceutical products in Bahrain.
  3. Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration in medical tourism and private sector trade in pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

Energy and Renewable Collaboration

  1. Discussions highlighted the importance of hydrocarbon trade for energy security.
  2. Both nations agreed to expand cooperation in renewable energy, including green hydrogen and ammonia projects.
  3. The second meeting of the Joint Working Group on Renewable Energy was prioritized.

Defence and Security

  1. Agreement to explore a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for deeper military cooperation.
  2. Bahrain appreciated India’s participation in the Bahrain International Air Show 2024 and its membership in the Combined Maritime Forces.

Expanding Opportunities Across Sectors

Agriculture and Food Security

India highlighted investment opportunities in food parks and boosting food exports to Bahrain. Both nations pledged to share expertise for collaborative projects aimed at food security.

Space and Technology

  1. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency (NSSA) are advancing joint projects, including satellite development and capacity building.
  2. A draft MoU between NSSA and New Space India Limited (NSIL) is underway.

  1. The steady increase in Indian investments and the presence of global Indian brands in Bahrain underscore the growing ties between the nations.
  2. Bahrain acknowledged the importance of cultural and business exchanges to foster bilateral relations.
