In Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, writer Tom Bower says that Prince Harry was left disappointed when members of his family failed to notice any similarity between Meghan Markle and his late mother, Princess Diana. It is said that the Duke of Sussex had expected Diana’s friends and sisters to note similar characteristics between the two women.
“Harry supposed that Diana’s friends and relations would notice an analogy between Diana and his then-fiancée. The two, he explained, faced the same issues,” Bower wrote. “He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend,” he added. The royal household not only was blind to a resemblance, Bower adds that they also worried about Meghan fitting into royal lifestyle.
“More discomfiting for him, they believed Meghan would not gel with the Royal Family,” Bower said.
Harry Compares Meghan to Diana
Prince Harry has already commented on the personal and emotional connection he believes exists between Meghan and his mother. In the 2022 Harry & Meghan Netflix docuseries, he emphasized their common values:
“So much of what Meghan is and the way she is, is so reminiscent of my mum. She has the same empathy, the same compassion, the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”
In the couple’s 2017 BBC engagement interview, Harry nostalgically envisioned Diana’s endorsement:
I think she (Diana) would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me, but then, as I said, she would have probably been best friends – best friends with Meghan.”
Skepticism About Harry-Meghan Relationship
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have spoken in different interviews that there were some people around them who were skeptical about their relationship. In his Netflix series, Harry revealed that some of his family members felt the romance would not last.
“But the fact that I was going out with an American actress, was likely what impaired their judgment more than anything else. Oh, she’s an American actress, this won’t last long.”
