Hamas Threatens Hostage “Neutralisation” Over Rescue Attempts

Hamas has warned that it will “neutralise” hostages if Israel conducts any rescue operations akin to the Nuseirat camp raid in June. In an internal statement dated November 22, the group expressed its belief that Israel is planning a similar operation.

Hamas Issues Strict Instructions

The statement, reportedly shared with its factions by the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, instructed operatives to tighten living conditions for hostages and follow prior directives issued after the Nuseirat operation. Hamas further urged its members to disregard potential consequences of these actions, holding Israel accountable for any harm to the captives.

A Grim Warning

A section of the document, labeled “recommendations,” instructed Hamas operatives to “activate neutralisation orders” immediately in response to any perceived Israeli incursion.

Historical Context

The June 9 rescue operation in Gaza’s Nuseirat camp resulted in the release of four hostages but also caused significant loss of life. Over 200 Palestinians reportedly died in the assault, making it one of the bloodiest chapters of the ongoing conflict.

Escalating Violence

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, launched after Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, has devastated the region. According to Palestinian authorities, the offensive has claimed over 44,500 lives and left widespread destruction. Israel, meanwhile, accuses Hamas of taking over 250 hostages during the October assault, which killed 1,200 Israelis.

Israel’s Response Pending

While there has been no immediate official response from Israel, Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that pressure on Hamas was intensifying. He hinted at progress towards a potential hostage deal but provided no further details.

A Dire Outlook

As the conflict rages, Hamas’ threat amplifies the stakes, complicating rescue efforts and further straining an already volatile situation.
