Giorgia Meloni Resigns as ECR President After EU Elections

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has resigned as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). She made this announcement during her party’s youth festival in Rome. “When I was asked to extend my term until the [EU] elections, I agreed,” Meloni explained.

Reason for Resignation

After the European elections, Meloni felt that her role had come to an end. “Now that the elections have taken place, I think I have fulfilled my duty,” she said. Furthermore, she pointed out that the group needs a full-time president to lead.

Morawiecki Seeks the Role

In light of Meloni’s resignation, former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is now vying for the presidency. His party, Law and Justice (PiS), holds 20 seats in the ECR. Meloni, who held the position since 2020, has expressed her support for Morawiecki’s bid.

Praise from Lebanese Prime Minister

At the same festival, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati took the opportunity to praise Meloni for Italy’s role in supporting the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. He emphasized the need to uphold the ceasefire for ensuring long-term stability in the region.

EU’s Role in Syrian Refugee Return

Additionally, Mikati highlighted the European Union’s critical role in facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. In response, Meloni emphasized that Italy’s political stability enhances the country’s credibility on the international stage. She also expressed confidence that her government would complete its full term, a statement that was met with applause.
