Drug Use And Foreign Links? Elon Musk’s Clearance Under The Microscope

SpaceX executives have apparently called on Elon Musk to rescind hisapplication for greater security clearances, warning of potential risks associated with the claims of drug use and the associations he made with foreign powers, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to The Wall Street Journal, Musks lawyers warned thedirectors of SpaceX that an in-depth review of Musks personal life and lifestyle may be part of pursuing greater clearances.

Musk currently holds “top secret” clearance, which took years to obtain. However, this level of clearance provides only limited access to SpaceX’s government-related operations. During an October town hall meeting, Musk referred to the secrecy around certain projects, saying, “Most of the stuff that I’m aware of. the reason to keep it top secret is it’s so boring.”

Allegations and Denials

The Journal reported accusations that Musk had been in contact with Putin since 2022 and that he abused substances, such as ketamine. SpaceX denied the report by stating that reports of ties with foreign countries were misleading and unsubstantiated. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson commented, stating that such accusations would be concerning if true.

Locked-out Access to Sensitive Projects

Even with the clearances, Musk is still restricted from accessing sensitive compartmented information concerning some of the projects run by the Department of Defense, such as military and intelligence satellites and SpaceXs Star shield spy satellite program. To gain higher access, Musk would have to provide the government with comprehensive details regarding his personal and professional affairs, which might lead to denial or even revocation of his present clearance.

It raises a number of questions that question whether Musk is associated with critical national security projects, what foreign ties might involve. SpaceX continues to protect the position of Musk in saying that his leadership makes it all worthwhile while explaining away the allegations.
