‘Cyber-Farting’ Case: Woman Sends Farting Videos to Boyfriend’s Ex

In a bizarre case, a 25-year-old woman pleaded guilty in the UK’s first-ever ‘cyber-farting’ case, after sending videos of herself passing gas to her boyfriend’s ex. Rhiannon Evans appeared in court, where she was accused of causing ‘distress or anxiety’ to her partner’s former girlfriend, Deborah Prytherch.

According to The Sun, the videos sent by Evans showed her passing gas on camera. Prosecutor Diane Williams described the videos as not only “inappropriate” but also “indecent or grossly offensive.” She explained the first video: “She proceeds to pass gas by placing the camera on her bottom and passing the gas.” Evans reportedly sent three more videos with similar content and four additional ones over the following days, all featuring her farting while smiling at the camera.

A victim impact statement, read to the court, Prytherch also voiced that she feels unsafe at home due to the videos. “I want to feel safe in my home,” she told the court, hinting at the distress the videos had caused her.

Why the Videos Were Sent

Evans admitted sending the videos, claiming that it was for the reason that her boyfriend was not being treated right by his ex. According to the prosecutor though, it was “purely malicious,” claiming the Evans was laughing about it, while the victim was not. “She was smirking throughout, found it hilarious but the victim didn’t,” the prosecutor said.

Evans’ Defence

Evans was arrested at her home in Caernarfon. Her defense counsel, Harriet Gorst, argued that the videos were sent when Evans was drinking, and that she now appreciates how upsetting they must have been. Defense counsel added that Evans’ partner was in difficulties over his former relationship regarding child contact.

Evans’ Point of View

Despite pleading guilty, Evans could not believe the seriousness of the case. “I never thought farting would land me in court. I think the sentence is a bit excessive and dramatic,” she said. She added, “We are living in a very ‘snowflake’ generation.” She further mentioned that, “I sent the messages on WhatsApp. I do have regrets, but I wouldn’t have thought I would be here for something like this, to be honest. It’s petty. I’ve learned my lesson.”

The Punishment Ms Evans received a 12-month community order and a two-year restraining order. In addition, she will receive 15 sessions of rehabilitation and has to abstain from alcohol for 60 days.
