Police have arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in connection with the murder of Brian Thompson, a senior executive at UnitedHealthcare. Mangione was taken into custody after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee who reported his suspicious behavior.
Authorities found Mangione in possession of a “ghost gun,” capable of firing 9MM rounds and equipped with a suppressor. He also carried fake IDs and a manifesto criticizing the insurance industry.
Thompson was fatally shot in a targeted attack last Wednesday outside the New York Hilton Midtown, where he was attending an investor conference. Surveillance footage captured the hooded suspect approaching Thompson from behind and firing multiple shots, killing him on the spot.
The shooter fled the scene on foot, later used a bicycle to reach Central Park, and boarded a bus out of the city.
Law enforcement sources indicate Mangione harbored hostility towards corporate America, as evidenced by materials found in his possession. Police Chief Joseph Kenny described the suspect’s writings as reflecting “ill-will towards corporate America.”
Authorities are investigating whether the weapon used in the killing was a veterinary gun, typically employed for euthanizing animals.
The arrest was made possible due to a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who alerted authorities about Mangione’s suspicious behavior.
New York detectives are now working with Pennsylvania authorities to bring Mangione back to New York for further questioning.
The chilling incident, caught on camera, has drawn attention to workplace violence and anti-corporate sentiments. It underscores the importance of security measures at public events involving corporate figures.
