Tulip Siddiq was sentenced to two years in prison in absentia by a Bangladeshi court for corruption related to a land allocation case on 1 December 2025. Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) accused her of using her influence as Hasina’s niece to secure a Dhaka land plot for her mother and siblings. She is sentenced for two years in prison and a fine of 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (~£620). She, Hasina, and other co-accused were not present at the time of trial. An arrest warrant was issued in April 2025. The UK has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh, so Siddiq is unlikely to serve the sentence unless a formal extradition process is approved.
Tulip Rizwana Siddiq FRSA is a British-Bangladeshi politician and convicted criminal who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hampstead and Highgate, previously Hampstead and Kilburn, since 2015.
Siddiq was born on 16 September 1982 in Sutton, London, to Shafique Ahmed Siddique, a former professor at Dhaka University, and Sheikh Rehana, who came to the UK as a teenager seeking political asylum. Her parents married in Kilburn in 1980. She has an older brother, Radwan "Bobby" Mujib, and a younger sister, Azmina Siddiq. At age 15, her family moved to Hampstead. Raised as a Muslim, Siddiq has said her family embraced multicultural Britain.
She studied at Scholastica in Dhaka, The Royal School, Hampstead, and Mill Hill School before earning an undergraduate degree in English Literature from University College London and a master’s degree from King’s College London. In 2011, she completed a second master’s in Politics, Policy, and Government.
Siddiq joined the Labour Party at 16, inspired by the NHS and the care her disabled father received after a stroke. She cites former Labour minister Barbara Castle as a political hero and describes her mother and aunt as “two very strong feminists.”
In 2006, she unsuccessfully ran in a Camden Council by-election. In 2010, she became Camden Council’s first female Bangladeshi councillor, serving as Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities until 2014. Around 2009, she worked for the Bangladesh Awami League in the UK and EU lobbying unit and appeared on the BBC as a spokesperson.
In July 2013, Siddiq was chosen as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn, despite facing a smear campaign. She later revealed that senior party members advised her against standing due to her Muslim surname. Between 2013–2014, she campaigned on issues including opposition to High Speed 2, fighting high payday lender charges, and supporting local services such as Belsize Fire Station, West Hampstead tube access, and the Swiss Cottage post office.
She is married to Christian Percy, a strategy consultant formerly with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They married in 2013 and have two children. Percy became a freelance consultant to allow more flexible childcare.
