Between 1996 and 2000, Kast served as a councilman in Buin. In 2001, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies representing District 30 of San Bernardo.
He later became Secretary General of the Independent Democratic Union party, from which he resigned to pursue a presidential run.
During his time in parliament, Kast received strong backing from Bishop Juan Ignacio Gonzalez Errazuriz of San Bernardo.
The bishop publicly supported Kast views against emergency contraception and same sex marriage. This support played a significant role in strengthening Kast early political base.
