Uttar Pradesh continued to swelter in a heatwave with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius across most regions on Sunday. The hottest city, Prayagraj, recorded a blistering 47.6 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than the city’s average. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Lucknow reported dry conditions statewide, with severe heatwave conditions affecting numerous areas.
According to the RMC forecast, there is no immediate relief in sight from the intense heat. Jhansi experienced a high of 47.1 degrees Celsius, while Varanasi and Kanpur both reached 46.8 degrees. Agra saw temperatures climb to 46.5 degrees, and Sultanpur recorded 46.4 degrees. Other affected cities include Fatehpur at 46.2 degrees, Fursatganj and Barabanki each at 46 degrees, Orai at 45.8 degrees, and the state capital Lucknow at 45.6 degrees.
In neighboring states, Punjab and Haryana also endured extreme heatwave conditions on Sunday. Samrala in Ludhiana, Punjab, recorded a temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest place in the state. Nuh in Haryana was similarly affected, with temperatures reaching 46.6 degrees Celsius. The heatwave extended to Chandigarh, the shared capital of both states, which saw a maximum temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius.
The ongoing heatwave across these northern states underscores the severity of the current weather conditions. Authorities continue to advise residents to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours. The Met office emphasizes that the public should remain vigilant as temperatures are expected to remain dangerously high in the coming days.
