Delhi civic body poll dates likely to be announced today

A day after the announcement of Gujarat Assembly elections, the State Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for civic body polls in Delhi. “The State Election Commission – NCT of Delhi – will hold a press conference at 4pm today in the conference hall at Nigam Bhawan, Kashmere Gate,” an official statement read.

Delhi civic polls were originally scheduled to be held in the first half of 2022 but got postponed after the centre’s decision to unify three municipal corporations into MCD. After the merger, the number of wards in the national capital has been reduced to 250 whereas earlier the number was 272.

For the past 15 years, BJP has been in the power in the civic bodies. The party emerged victorious initially in2007 when MCD was unified.  BJP also won the 2012 and 2017 elections after the trifurcation of MCD.

However, the tussle between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP over the civic issues is far from getting over as both the parties keep on hounding each other for the problems.  Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed BJP at a press conference last month. “The people know that AAP was made responsible for schools and hospitals, which have now been transformed. Now the people have decided to give us the responsibility of sanitation. They can’t suppress people’s will,” said Kejriwal.
