Kuala Lumpur:

India’s Ashmita Chaliha produced another commanding performance at the Malaysia Masters on Thursday, defeating Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei 21-13, 21-16 to advance to the women’s singles quarter-finals at the Stadium Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

The Indian shuttler, who entered the tournament through the qualifying rounds, continued her impressive run by overcoming world No. 55 Jin Wei in straight games in just 27 minutes. Ashmita looked in control throughout the contest, displaying sharp movement and consistent shot placement to keep the home favourite under pressure.

The opening game was largely one-sided as Ashmita dictated the rallies from the outset and raced to a comfortable 21-13 win. Jin Wei attempted to respond in the second game and briefly narrowed the gap with a more aggressive approach, but the Indian maintained her composure and never allowed her opponent to build sustained momentum.

Ashmita closed out the second game 21-16 to seal her place in the last eight of the Super 500 tournament, marking the third time in her career that she has reached the quarter-finals of an event of this category.

The victory continues a strong week for the Indian player, who has steadily gained confidence since progressing through the qualifiers. Her disciplined approach and ability to control long rallies proved decisive against the experienced Malaysian.

Ashmita now faces a tough challenge in the quarter-finals against Denmark’s eighth seed Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt. The Dane advanced to the last eight after defeating two Indian players, Anmol Kharb and Malvika Bansod, in the earlier rounds of the competition.

While Ashmita kept India’s campaign alive in the women’s singles draw, the remainder of the Indian contingent bowed out of their respective matches on Thursday. Details of the other defeats were not immediately available, but Ashmita’s run provided a bright spot for India at the tournament.

The Malaysia Masters, one of the prominent events on the BWF World Tour calendar, has attracted several top-ranked international players this week. For Ashmita, the tournament represents another significant step in her development on the international circuit as she continues to seek consistency at elite-level competitions.

A strong performance against Kjaersfeldt in the quarter-finals would further boost the Indian’s growing reputation and potentially open the door for a deep run at the Super 500 event.
