Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar temple soared with devotees on sixth ‘Shravan Somvar’

On the occasion of the sixth ‘Shravan Somvar’, a large number of devotees swarmed Mahakaleshwar temple situated in Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh to offer prayers.

The devotees lined up in the early morning to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva at the temple and also showed up at a special ‘Bhasma Aarti’ of Baba Mahakal performed here on the occasion. ‘Bhasma aarti’ (offering with ashes) is a very special ritual here. It is performed during the ‘Brahma Muhurta’ around 3:30 and 5:30 in the morning.

‘Sawan’, which is also known as ‘Shravan’ is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, and is considered as one of the holiest months for Hindus. During this period, every Monday is regarded as a highly auspicious time to fast and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

According to Hindu religious beliefs, Shravan month is believed to be the favourite month of Lord Shiva. It is believed that by worshipping Lord Shiva in this month, one gets immediate relief from their troubles. This year Shravan month will last 59 days, which started on July 4 and will go on till August 31.
