The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), recently held a graduation ceremony to honor participants of the Farmer Field Schools program. This milestone marks a significant advancement for women in the UAE’s agriculture sector, particularly in pest management and sustainable cultivation.
This initiative spanned five schools across Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah, focusing on combatting the Red Palm Weevil (RPW) and enhancing date palm cultivation practices. Among the 48 graduates, eight women farm owners and managers participated, many for the first time, gaining hands-on experience in agricultural resilience.
Dr. Mohamed Salman Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary of Food Diversity at MoCCAE, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. “We are proud to support initiatives that empower women and foster collaboration among farmers,” he remarked, highlighting programs like ‘Plant the Emirates’ and the ‘National Agriculture Centre’ as key to addressing national agricultural challenges.
Kayan Akram Jaff, Head of Mission of the FAO Subregional Office, spoke to the progressive impact of women’s involvement, stating, “This program not only equips farmers with practical skills but also champions the vital role of women in agriculture.”
FAO Senior Plant Protection Officer Thaer Yaseen, who leads the Red Palm Weevil project, stressed the importance of community efforts in pest management. “Through collaboration and shared knowledge, we can effectively combat this pest and safeguard our date palm resources,” he said.
The Farmer Field Schools program yielded significant outcomes:

– Enhanced farming practices leading to higher yields and healthier date palms.
– Strengthened collaboration among farmers, fostering empowerment and resilience.
